Wood furniture is a sound investment; especially if it is a piece of
designer furniture or unique bespoke furniture. It holds or increases
its value over the years and stands out as being superior to furniture
made out of synthetic materials that may lose its integrity and use more
easily than the sturdy wood as it breaks more easily, and if scratched,
will have to be thrown away. Wood, on the other hand, can be more
easily repaired and a scratch tended to and eliminated with the proper
care and attention so that the piece of furniture will not have to lose

But which wood types are best for
certain types of furniture? And how to tell whether or not a piece of
wood is genuine? Here follows some short descriptions of some types of
wood such as: pine, oak, maple, eucalyptus, birch, beech, ash and alder;
some of the most popular types of wood for constructing furniture.
Pine
is a type of wood that stains very well and is amongst the best of the
woods that do so. Technically softwood pine is still used for making
furniture. There are a wide variety of pine, for example the ponderosa
pine or the sugar pine. The type which gives the most decorative grain
pattern however is the radiate pine.
Also a good staining wood,
oak is extremely versatile since it comes in several different shades
and hues of red and even yields a white wood. Oak is among the most
popular woods used in furniture making.
Maple is a light-colored
hardwood. Both the western maple and the eastern maple can stain to any
color. But for heavier furniture, the western maple is more durable, so
is usually the type chosen to make heavier furniture.
Eucalyptus
wood is chosen to make furniture of high durability and strength. The
eucalyptus needs very little maintenance. It weathers beautifully and
does not decay easily.
Birch is a highly priced hardwood which is
popular for its white color and fine grain, which is perfect for
accepting any stain and a variety of designs.
Beech is often used
to replace missing or broken parts of furniture that were originally
made of oak. Beech stains well. It is cream in color which makes it
ideal for making baseball bats along with other wooden sports equipment.
Ash
is another wood that stains well. It is a hardwood, light in color. Its
tight grains and long fibers make ash perfect for bending, which is why
ash is often used in fashioning chairs and other such furniture.
Alder
is a type of wood known for its capacity to stain well. It is third
only to pine and oak as the most widely used wood for making furniture
in a ready to finish style. It is relatively cheap compared to most
other woods, and can appear to be like other, more expensive varieties
like maple or birch.
The unique characteristics of each type of
wood helps to decide what type of furniture will be built out of it. The
quality of the grain and The color of the wood and the grain quality
has an influence on the kind of design that will be implemented on the
wood. Real wood furniture is definitely a good asset, no matter which
type of wood is used to create it.
