Wood Shaping Tools

All woodworkers start their projects from raw timber. It's how they shape it that makes the difference. Here' s a list of some of the most commonly used wood shaping tools:

Block Plane

The block plane is used to shear off the end grain. The blade is mounted at a low angle. This will make your life easier when it comes to trim and fit wood pieces.

Jack Plane

Usually 12 -15 inch long, jack planes are used to quickly remove large quantities of wood. Often used by woodworkers to rough shape boards.

Chisels

Chisels are the perfect tool you need to make cuts or if you get rid of protruding piece of wood without damaging the whole piece. There are several types:

Firmer: beveled on both sides instead of just one side.

Fishtail Chisel: a chisel with a splayed end

Flat Gouge: a gouge with just a little curvature. Great for finishing and smoothing.

Gouge: chisel-like tool with a curved cutting edge at its ends.

Glut: Usually made in the woodworking shop when the need arises, the glut is made of wood and is used as a wedge splitting tool.

Mortise Chisel: stout chisel with a deep cross section. Its sides are can be square or tapering slightly towards its back. Usually, you need a mallet or a hammer to use this tool.

Paring Chisel: this is a thin chisel is thin, sometimes having beveled edges. It is used to finely clean surfaces.

Parting Tool: a deep narrow V-ground chisel used mainly to indicate exact diameters at different parts of piece.

Roughing Gouge: this is a large and square nosed gouge. The roughing gouge is typically used by turners to alter square shaped wood stock and rivings into a cylindrical section.

Veiner: This is a small deep gouge.

Bending Strap

The bending strap is steel strap used to bend. It's placed along the convex side of the piece of wood that you want to bend and held in place by stops at both ends of the piece. The bending strap takes most of the tension generated while you re forcing the wood to bend.

Sandpaper

Paper with abrasive elements on its surface. The elements found on sand "paper" or "cloth"can be flint, garnet, emery, aluminum oxide or silicone carbide. You can find either a closed or an open coat density.

Rasp

Long and flat tool with raised teeth on its surface. It can be used to shape all kinds of wood.

Flat Rasp

This tool is used to smooth and straighten wooden surfaces. Differently to a regular rasp, teeth are on one edge only and the other side is safe. You can use the flat rasp when you need to rasp without any unwanted rasping. The tip and the sides are slightly curved inward but the body is flat.
