Wood Finishing Tool List

Wood finishing is an important phase in woodworking. It makes sure that imperfections on the wood surface are minimized or hidden. Here's a list of the basic wood finishing tools that every woodworker must own:

Sandpaper

This is a form of abrasive paper, with particles glued on it. Sandpaper is very useful to remove small amounts of material or to smooth the surface of the work piece.

Sandpaper also comes in many grits and different types, depending on the tasks it is used for.

Sanding Blocks

Sanding blocks are made wrapping1/4 sheet of sandpaper around a wooden block to provide stronger support.

Steel or Bronze Wool

It comes in different grades and different brands. Steel/bronze wool pads are used for the final finishing. However, if you are planning on using water to raise the wood grain, avoid using them. Also, remember that steel wool pads should be degreased before using them for woodworking.

Wood Stains

Wood stains are a type of paint penetrates the wood itself without hiding the natural pattern of the wood. However, the color of the stain can be seen on the surface of the wood.

Straight Oils

Straight oils (typically pure tung oil, raw or boiled linseed oil, walnut oil and mineral oil) are used for things like butchers blocks, cutting boards and workbenches. You can apply as many coats as you like of these oils. Straight oils should be applied on items that are handled as they easily attract dirt and grime.

Varnish

A varnish is a straight oil that has a resin added to it. These have polyurethane or other resins in the mix to make then blend even more flexible.

Oil and Varnish Blends

They offer great protection and are also easy to apply like straight oils. However, it is not recommended to use them on objects that are frequently used.

Lacquers

The finishing color of laquers is is a semi-translucent light brown. There are also black, yellow, green, red and blue lacquers. Applied abundantly, laquers give the finish a more vibrant look.

Water Based Finishes

Water-based finishes look milky when still fresh and become clear when the dry. They are the perfect choice for frequently used areas because of their good wear and tear resistance. They can be applied over light-colored paints or stains so that the undercoat can be clearly seen.

Brushes

Always keep a good range of brushes in your tool box. They come in many different sizes. The type and size of brush will determine how the finished piece looks.
