A Brief History of the Jeep and the Culture Around It

The Jeep is probably one of the most rugged and manly vehicles in the market today. It has been the vehicle of choice for adventure-seekers and knights-in-camouflage for more than fifty years. Fans of the vehicle have formed clubs across the world to share their common bond over this amazing vehicle.

The first Jeep was developed and manufactured out of necessity - the US Army needed a vehicle that was fast, light-weight and could function in almost any terrain required ASAP since their butts were getting whooped by the Axis powers.

The Army's call to action

They sent out their requirements to automobile manufacturers and gave them forty-nine days or seven weeks to come up with a working prototype. The original Jeep requirements included the following specifications:

Vehicle weight: approximately 1,300 pounds
Four-wheel drive
Engine (power): 85 pound-feet of torque
Wheelbase: Not more than 80 inches
Tread: Not more than 47 inches
Ground Clearance: Minimum ground clearance of 6.25 inches
Payload: 600 pounds
Cooling System: Good enough to allow a sustained low speed without overheating the engine

Designing any vehicle can take weeks, months - even years of careful planning. Especially during wartime when manpower was in short supply, it isn't all that surprising that only two vehicle manufacturers responded to an invitation that was sent out to more than a hundred companies around the country.

The three manufacturers who responded to the Army's invitation were the American Bantam Car Company and Willys-Overland. Willys-Overland requested more time to complete their vehicle (a request that was denied) while the Bantam Car Company had to accept the help of Detroit engineer, Karl Probst who was enlisted by the National Defense Advisory committee and accepted the job without pay. He was able to come up with the basic blueprint in two days and the Bantam prototype was presented to the US Army on July 22.

ATV Reviews - 2009 Suzuki ATV Ratings

2009 Suzuki ATVs offer a great opportunity to catch a quality ATV at a good, discounted price. These units are generally three to four years old from initial release, so most retailers have discounted them to move off the floor where possible. That said, most units are used since they've been out of production for a while.

Suzuki QuadSport Z400

The 2009 Quadsport Z400 is a definite grab, having scored big on consumer ratings and feedback. The Z400 has a high consumer rating on performance, comfort, value for the purchase, and quality of workmanship. When first released the unit was marketed at a price tag of $6,500, which was at the midrange of the offerings available from all competitors.

Suzuki QuadSport Z250

The Z250 is a mid-range offering in the Z-series ATVs and did well in both performance and quality. However, consumers were not quite perfectly happy with the model's comfort and value for the purchase. The Z250 retailed for $4,200 when sold brand new, and followed the ATV-motorcross design more than the bulky QuadSport layout.

Suzuki QuadSport Z90 Special Edition

Designed as a scaled-down ATV versus its cousins offered by Suzuki, the Z90 appealed to the lower end of the price spectrum and bargain-hunters. That said, the assembly also scored very well with consumers, meeting high ratings in all the major factors ranging from comfort to value for the dollar spent. The Z90 retailed at $2,500 when sold new.

Suzuki KingQuad 400 FS

The KingQuad was likely marketed for the heavier rider and looks more like an ATV appeal to a big Mack truck driver. Retailed when new at $5,350, the KingQuad provided far more carrying space on the front and back and was designed more for being a work vehicle than a recreation ATV. The unit was produced in two models: standard and an anniversary edition.

Power Turn Kits for Your ATV Plow - A Guide to Understanding the Differences

If you have an ATV plow you are very familiar with the chore of getting off the ATV to turn the blade to the correct position over and over again. Over the past 5 years there have become a plethora of different types of automated turn kits to hit the market that all claim to solve this issue. While the goal is to be able to turn your blade from side to side without getting off your machine there are plenty of other factors to consider when choosing a turn kit.

Actuation type:

There are electric, manual, and hydraulic kits currently on the market. All of these have their benefits and detractions. Electric motors or linear actuators can be fast operating, quiet, and fairly inexpensive. The disadvantage of electric units can be their strength. Linear actuators can break or bend if the plow impacts a solid object as they have no built-in relief or clutch. Other electric motors can tear out the gears due to the same problem with having to withstand large plowing impacts.

Manual turns are simple and inexpensive but require more work from the operator. With most of these systems you need to pull a cord that releases the position pin, then you drive into a snow bank until the blade turns, and you then release the cord. It works most of the time but not all the time, occasionally forcing you back off the machine to get the position pin to lock back into place.

Hydraulic kits are the most expensive yet the most rugged. Hydraulics are made to withstand the extreme plowing forces, can move quickly, and are usually relief valve protected. With a relief valve, the extra pressure built up from hitting an immoveable object "pops off" or reliefs. The relief will normally reset itself allowing you to continue plowing. Hydraulics can be a little noisier than electric systems but not terrible.

What to Look for When Purchasing a Winch Mount for Your ATV

You may be like one of the thousands of people that find a good deal on a winch online or at your local discount store but soon find out you have a problem; how to mount it to your ATV. Most winches come with a universal "mount plate" but this is nothing more than a terrible boat anchor as it fits basically no machine out there. What you need is a custom winch mount for your particular machine.

A machine specific mount puts the winch in the proper location for your machine with the least amount of hassle or modifications. It will also position the fairlead to be in a position so the cable can pull from almost any angle without rubbing on the ATV.

Strength is of the utmost importance with your winch mount choice. Today's machines are much larger and more powerful and therefore can be very difficult to get out once stuck. Your winch mount is the critical link between your winch and machine, make sure it uses attachment points that secure to the main frame of the ATV. Some mounts that bolt to the front bumper may actually cause damage to your machine. A four point mounting location spread out as far as possible is the best mounting arrangement but may not always be possible due to the ATV's design. Research the different mounts on the market before purchasing; price should not always be your first concern here.

Ensure the winch mount is made of steel that is made in the USA of at least 7 gauge. Thinner material or cheap imported steel can bend easily and leave you stranded. Most mounts should come with a powder coated finish as this will last longer than standard paint. Your mounting hardware should be at least grade 5, when in doubt, ask the winch mount manufacturer.

Lastly, be sure the winch mount will fit both your machine and your winch. A good mount will have multiple winch bolt patterns cut into it so that it will fit most winches. For example, some winches bolt to the mount with just two bolts and some winches require 4 bolts.

Check your vin or registration card to be certain what year and model of ATV you own before ordering. Many times there may be a different mount required based on the year or model. Just because you own a Grizzly does not mean all the Grizzly mounts are the same, do your research! Most manufacturers will have a year, make, and model listing on their website, take a little extra time here before ordering to be sure you get the correct mount.
